Apple TV+ Is Bringing Back Sugar—Also, Why Is io9 Suddenly Talking About Sugar?

Sugar wrapped up its eight-episode first season back in May on Apple TV+, and despite its impressive pedigree—stars Colin Farrell (The Penguin), Kirby (The Sandman, The Good Place), Amy Ryan (Only Murders in the Building), and James Cromwell (Succession); director Fernando Meirelles (City of God)—io9 didn’t cover it because Sugar presented itself as the neo-noir tale of a private eye tracking down a missing person. But, uh, we will certainly be changing that approach now that Apple TV+ has announced a second season.

Sometimes, it’s hard to know if a project is actually genre enough to fit into io9’s coverage area of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy—and sometimes knowing the truth ahead of time can be a spoiler. A straightforward drama is obviously not in our wheelhouse, but Sugar contained a twist that made it absolutely clear it was telling a sci-fi story.

Before we get into any details there, here’s more about the renewal, courtesy of an Apple TV+ press release touting “one of the greatest plot twists in recent TV history.” All it says about season two’s plot is as follows: “After the events of season one, season two will see Sugar find himself back in Los Angeles taking on another missing person’s case, as he continues to look for answers surrounding his missing sister.”

“It has been incredibly exciting to see audiences around the world embrace Sugar, and we are thrilled to return for a second season,” executive producers Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg said in the release. “We’re so grateful to our partners at Apple for their support, our showrunner Sam Catlin, the brilliant Colin Farrell, and of course, our viewers. We can’t wait to get John Sugar back on the case.”

Catlin will also showrun season two; so far, there’s no word on who, if anyone, will return among the cast other than Farrell, who’s also an executive producer.

“Since its premiere, audiences have been gripped by the mysteries and twists of Sugar, with an incredible performance by Colin Farrell at the center,” enthused Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+. “Colin, Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon, and the entire team behind this series have brilliantly blended genres to create a compelling, can’t-miss series that keeps viewers guessing, and we cannot wait to see where Detective John Sugar finds himself in season two.”

Ok, and if you are dying to know…

Surprise: John Sugar turned out to be an alien! And so were some of the other characters! With that little factoid out in the open—to the viewing audience, at least; Sugar‘s general array of Earth people are unaware they’ve been secretly invaded—season two will definitely have some intriguing new territory to explore. You can catch up on Sugar season one on Apple TV+.
