He said it on TV so might as well make it official. Sony just announced that an untitled Spider-Man movie, starring Tom Holland and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, will be released on July 24, 2026.
The news comes after a round of press for Holland discussing his new non-alcoholic beer, where he was continually asked about Spider-Man 4. Finally, on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, he just said “It’s happening.” Now it has a release date and it’s official that Cretton, who helmed Shang-Chi and the and the Legend of the Ten Rings for Marvel Studios, is coming on board.
After the massive success of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, everyone knew another sequel was coming. It had to. But that film not only put Holland’s Peter Parker character in a whole new situation (a stranger to everyone who knows him thanks to Doctor Strange) but marked the end of Holland’s contact. That gave him some leverage and the actor used it, making sure that if he was going to come back for Spider-Man, he was doing it for the right reasons.
“When I signed my contract for [the first] Spider-Man, I signed a six-picture deal,” Holland said recently. “I was 18 years old. I was more excited than I’d ever been about anything ever, and for the last 10 years I have been at the beck and call of Marvel and Sony and proudly so. It’s been the best experience of my life. I’m now at a juncture where I can say ‘No,’ and now that I’ve been afforded that power I am struggling to figure out what is the right thing to do. It’s meant I’ve had to put my foot down in certain instances, which I haven’t been allowed to do in the past, and I think the learning curve that I’m on right now is dealing with that new sense of power—making sure that I don’t abuse it, but [also] making sure that I do the best thing for me rather than for the studio. And really the best thing for the character. I don’t want to make another movie for the sake of making it.”
He did say he liked where the script is at though and, this week on The Tonight Show, confirmed that filming will take place in the summer of 2025.
The summer of 2026 now becomes one of the most wild summers in recent memory. In addition to Spider-Man 4, there’s Avengers: Doomsday, there’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, new films from Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan (the latter of which will star Holland), Toy Story 5, Shrek 5 and Supergirl. Damn.
Which are you most excited for? And do you have confidence Spider-Man 4 will live up to expectations?
